1.结果状语从句表示主句的结果，所以总是位于主句之后，用so that或so...that...引导。

例如：

Many wives shoulder the prime responsibility for running the home，so that in most families the loss of the wife is more devastating than the loss of the husband.

【译文】许多妻子肩负起了养家的主要责任，所以对于多数家庭而言，失去妻子往往比失去丈夫更具有毁灭性。

My suitcase had become damaged on the way home，so that the lid would not stay closed.

【译文】在回家的路上，我的衣箱坏了，盖子盖不住了。

They have been so successful that they are moving to Bond Street.

【译文】一直以来，他们都很成功，最近他们就要搬到Bond大街去住了。

2.结果状语还常用so…as to do的结构表示（仅是不定式短语，非从句形式）。

例如：

The crowd is so large as to overflow the auditorium.

【译文】报告厅里的人太多了，以至于挤都挤不进去。

They were so surprised as not to try to stop him.

【译文】他们很吃惊，以至于没有试图拦下他。

He dressed so quickly as to put his boots on the wrong feet.

【译文】他穿得太急了，把靴子都穿在了相反的脚上。

3.结果状语从句有时可用sudh(a)+名词（词组）+ that...构成。

例如：

I slapped her hand and she got such a shock that she dropped the bag.

【译文】我打了一下她的手，她一惊，把包给扔了。

They obeyed him with such willingness that the strike went on for over a year.

【译文】他们心甘情愿地服从他，以至于这起罢工持续了一年多。

These birds have such small wings that they cannot get into the air even if they try.

【译文】这些鸟的翅膀太小了，即使它们再努力，也不能飞上天去。

4.有时such that连写在一起，也可引导结果状语从句（有人理解为同位语从句）；为了强调语气，还可以将such前置到句首，采用倒装结构。

例如：

The extent of the disaster was such that the local authorities were quite unable to cope.

【译文】这起灾难很严重，地方当局根本无力应付。

Her anxiety was such that she couldn't fall into asleep last night.

【译文】她太焦虑了，以至于昨晚不能人睡。

Such was the power of suggestion that within a very few minutes she fell asleep

【译文】暗示的力量很强，几分钟之内她就睡着了。
